There’s a time to sell a business… And there’s a time to wait.

Can you sell my business despite the last two years having been tough? This is a really tough question, so I’m going to shoot it to you straight.

One of the most difficult things for us to do is to sell a business with decreasing revenues and profits. No buyer would want to buy a declining business, and no bank will finance it because there is too much risk. The straight answer is there’s a certain time to sell a business, and there’s a certain time when the business becomes unsellable.

If you’re nearing retirement age and have experienced two to four consecutive years of excellent sales, revenue, and profit, it may be worth considering selling your business. That may sound counter-intuitive, but if you wait a few more years and experience a downturn in sales, those previous two years of high performance will be forgotten.
